At President Obama’s June 8, 2009 Cabinet Meeting discussing Administration-wide plans to accelerate implementation of the second 100 days of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder made a commitment to hire or keep approximately 5,000 career law enforcement jobs through the COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP). It is one of the targets of the 10-point Roadmap to Recovery program of the Reinvestment Act.
The COPS Office received 7,272 applications for the COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP), totaling $8.3 billion and requesting more than 39,000 sworn law enforcement positions. Since the April 14 application deadline, we have been reviewing the applications and calling agencies to validate application data. In the next phase of the process we will conduct in-depth budget request reviews and evaluate retention requirement information and other aspects of the applications to determine how best to allocate the funds. We will announce awards no later than September 30. Continue to visit the COPS office web site for updated CHRP information.
