WASHINGTON, DC – The innovative partnership that the Livermore Police Department, California developed with their local community is highlighted in a new Justice Department publication on community policing. The partnership was developed to engage the Livermore community to fight crime in city parks.
A new report entitled, "Problem-Solving Partnerships: Including the Community for a Change," was recently released by the Justice Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. In this publication, seven police agencies – including the Livermore Police Department – were selected from more than 400 agencies across the country. The Justice Department report identifies this successful partnership as a model for other police departments across the nation.
After a careful analysis of crime data and recognition that both park usage and city park revenue had decreased, Livermore police partnered with area schools, parks, and the city’s Recreation Department to develop a Park Watch program. This effort was designed to decrease undesirable activities, such as drugs, vandalism and graffiti, in and around the parks. This innovative response is showing promise and should produce long term effects. The city almost immediately saw a decrease in vandalism and graffiti and an increase in the appearance parks. Survey responses also showed that residents also reported feeling safer in the parks.
