COPS OFFICE RELEASES NEW CRIME FIGHTING PUBLICATIONS

Eight Publications in a Series of Problem Oriented Guides for Police Now Available

San Diego, CA. - The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today released eight new publications that will help local law enforcement agencies fight crime. The publications are part of a series of 19 Problem Oriented Guides for Police that offer proven, practical strategies to reduce the occurrence of specific crime and disorder problems. The guides were released during the 2001 Problem Oriented Policing Conference: Progress Through Innovation that is being hosted here by the Police Executive Research Forum through Saturday, December 8th.

The guides released today are Assaults in and Around Bars, Street Prostitution, Speeding in Residential Areas, Drug Dealing in Privately Owned Apartment Complexes, False Burglar Alarms, Disorderly Youth in Public Places, Loud Car Stereos, and Robbery at Automated Teller Machines. COPS also released another publication, not a part of the series, entitled Using Analysis for Problem Solving.

"The information contained in the guides will be a tremendous resource to state and local police and sheriff departments," said COPS Director Carl R. Peed. "In addition to helping law enforcement agencies respond effectively to specific crime issues, the guides will help agencies better understand the causes of these crimes, and to proactively implement strategies that address the factors contributing to their occurrence."

Lawmakers, police, community residents - anyone who is struggling with day-to-day crime and disorder problems - can use these problem-oriented guides to develop effective solutions to common crimes. The guides include pointed discussions and suggestions on how to identify crime problems, how to tackle those problems, and how to evaluate responses.

Copies of the guides may be obtained by contacting the U.S. Department of Justice Response Center at (800) 421-6770, or askCopsRC@usdoj.gov.
