FIRST NEW POST-ACADEMY POLICE OFFICER FIELD TRAINING PROGRAM IN 30 YEARS...

Philadelphia, PA - The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today announced the first new post-academy field training program for law enforcement agencies in more than 30 years. The Police Training Officer (PTO) program incorporates community policing and problem solving principles and produces officers who have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude for today's law enforcement environment.

AMERICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT RECEIVES $635 MILLION IN COPS OFFICE SUPPORT DURING FISCAL YEAR 2003

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) awarded America's state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies $635 million in grants to reduce crime during federal fiscal year 2003 (Oct. 1, 2002 - Sept. 30, 2003). COPS awarded 1,620 grants to 1,577 police departments and sheriffs' offices in all 50 states and four U.S. territories.

COPS OFFICE ANNOUNCES $4.9 MILLION TO INCREASE SCHOOL SAFETY IN 27 STATES

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today announced $4.9 million in grants to 106 local law enforcement agencies to enhance school safety in 27 states. The grants were awarded through COPS' Secure Our Schools program, which provides funds to improve security at schools and on school grounds.

NATION’S LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES GET $59.6 MILLION TO SUPPLEMENT HOMELAND SECURITY EXPENSES

COPS OFFICE AWARDS $5.8 MILLION TO FIGHT METHAMPHETAMINE

Including these grants, COPS has awarded $34.3 million this fiscal year to fight the escalating methamphetamine problem. This latest funding will support a variety of methamphetamine related child endangerment, training, and environmental initiatives of local law enforcement agencies and criminal justice organizations. The grants are being awarded to fifteen law enforcement agencies and three organizations that will provide training on methamphetamine enforcement.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES $66.5M TO SUPPORT INTEGRATED COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

The grants will cover the purchase of communications equipment, enhancements to communications infrastructure, and project management expenses.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES $2.7M TO SUPPORT PUBLIC SAFETY INTEROPERABILITY FOR GREATER KANSAS CITY

Kansas City, MO. - Attorney General John Ashcroft and the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today awarded over $2.7 million to greater Kansas City to develop a voice and emergency Management Information System interoperability project. The grants will cover the purchase of communications equipment, enhancements to communications infrastructure, and project management expenses in this multi-jurisdictional project to support areas surrounding Kansas City in both Missouri and Kansas.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AWARDS $3.1 MILLION IN GRANTS FOR IN-CAR CAMERAS

Washington, DC. – Attorney General John Ashcroft and the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today announced $3.1 million in grants to fund the purchase of more than 700 in-car video cameras. These grants will go to 17 state law enforcement agencies to help promote officer safety and integrity.

COPS OFFICE AWARDS $1.7 MILLION TO FUND POLICE INTEGRITY INITIATIVES

The grants are being awarded to the Boston, San Diego, and Virginia Beach Police Departments, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The funds will be used to develop innovative programs that address policies and practices that could impact organizational culture within law enforcement agencies. The results of these programs will be published by COPS and will serve as technical assistance resources to law enforcement agencies nationwide.

COPS OFFICE AWARDS $400K TO FUND PROGRAMS THAT ENCOURAGE THE PUBLIC TO VOLUNTEER WITH LOCAL POLICE

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has awarded nearly $400,000 to nine law enforcement agencies to fund Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) programs in eight states. The goal of VIPS is to enhance the capacity of law enforcement to prevent, prepare for, and respond to crime, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

COPS OFFICE AWARDS $5.2 MILLION TO FUND INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY POLICING INITIATIVES

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has awarded $5.2 million to fund a variety of innovative community policing initiatives. Today’s grants were awarded to 20 law enforcement agencies and criminal justice organizations to support applied research and evaluation initiatives, and the development of tools, products and best practices that will advance community policing.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE ANNOUNCES $23 MILLION TO SUPPORT LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today awarded $23 million in grants to support the national network of 31 Regional Community Policing Institutes (RCPI) and the Community Policing Consortium (CPC). The COPS RCPIs are strategically located throughout the country to address the community policing and crime prevention training needs of law enforcement agencies and communities in all 50 states.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AWARDS $36 MILLION TO NATIVE AMERICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has awarded $36 million to 124 tribal law enforcement agencies in 25 states. The grants were awarded under COPS Tribal Resources Grant Program (TRGP), and will be used to hire 102 community policing officers and purchase much needed crime fighting equipment.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE ANNOUNCES $99.3 MILLION TO ADD OFFICERS TO AMERICA’S STREETS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today announced $99.3 million in grants to fund the hiring of 1311 full-time and 16 part-time law enforcement officers in communities in 49 states and three U.S. territories.

COPS AWARDS POLICE TRAINING GRANT TO ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE / U.S. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM PROGRAM

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced a $100 thousand grant to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to support a joint ADL/United States Holocaust Memorial Museum program, Law Enforcement and Society: Lessons of the Holocaust.

ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES $899,500 IN GRANTS TO SUPPORT 311 NON-EMERGENCY PHONE SYSTEMS

The Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) today announced $899,500 in grants to improve 311, non-emergency phone services in three communities. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (NC) will receive $299,500, the City of Columbus Department of Public Safety (OH) will receive $300,000, and the Minneapolis Police Department (MN) will receive $300,000 in COPS funds.

ATTORNEY GENERAL AWARDS $21.4 MILLION TO HIRE 176 NEW POLICE OFFICERS IN AMERICA'S SCHOOLS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced grants totaling $21.4 million to add 176 officers to the nation’s schools. The grants are being awarded to 40 law enforcement agencies in 24 states through the COPS In Schools program, which funds the hiring of police officers who are assigned to a school as their community policing beat.
